That hymn is one of my favorites – and I thought I’d make another wallpaper using the first line from it. I just ordered some new brushes (Yasutomo Silverado – sizes 2, 3, 4). I already had the 00 brush and loved it, so I thought I’d try out some others. These are totally my favorite brushes now – they’re excellent quality and are perfect for precise hand lettering. Plus they’re stiff enough that you can acheive those thick and very thin lines easily. (If you’re into hand lettering check out www.paperinkarts.com– their prices are great and they have a good amount of supplies. I got my brushes for a little more than a dollar each, which is amazing considering how great they are.)

Monday Inspiration
I love this lady’s style (photo in the upper right corner). Neuteral colors + simple style + leather bag – that’s pretty much the perfect outfit in my book! I just discovered the blog Unfancy, where the lady in this photo, Caroline, blogs about creating and maintaining a capsule wardrobe. (And frankly, I would love to have every piece of clothing she blogs about! She has great style.) What she does is create a wardrobe of 37 pieces for each season, and she doesn’t let herself buy any clothes during that time. The idea is to have a few items of clothing that you love, so that you don’t look at your closet and think “well, I don’t love it, but I might wear it someday…”. It’s a way to simplify and define your style, and save yourself a good amount of money!
I think it’s an awesome idea, and I’ve started working on my own capsule wardrobe a little at a time. It really is so helpful to focus on buying and keeping a small number of the things you love that mesh with the rest of your wardrobe, instead of getting things here and there that fall into that maybe class.

A Northern Belle / Blog Design
Every time I work with Meghan I have so much fun – she is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever gotten to know. I had designed her blog about a year or two ago, and recently she emailed me saying she was going to be changing her blog a little bit – including the name and the design. She’s an author (and just published her first book, a historical fiction novel about the Civil War!) and after a few years of blogging and figuring out the direction she wanted to go, she was ready to bring it all together into the type of blog that fit her completely. The name was changed from Just As I Am to A Northern Belle (which fits vintage, history-loving Meghan perfectly!), and the design came next.
Meghan wanted to go with a gray and blue color scheme, with a little pink here and there. She also had the great idea to include a compass in the design – an element to combine the concepts of the North and the time period of the 1800s. We ended up creating a three-column blog, with hand lettered title, hand painted compass, and light colored roses to bring more color into the whole design. I love how this design turned out – as always, Meghan, it was a pleasure working with you!

Monday Inspiration
I started the week off right today, with a homemade latte at home and then a venti latte at Starbucks (the homemade one won). Just within this first weekday I’ve had so much variety in work. It makes it more fun to have multiple projects that require different skill sets and styles – I can spend my morning deep in code, move on to a hand lettering project, and then work on print products all within the same work day. I like how within the designing/developing world so much is excercised. You have your techinical side and your artistic side, and both sides rely on each other to create one thing.
