With Grace in Your Heart & Flowers in Your Hair

Creating a hand lettered piece every day (well, mostly every day) has been so great so far. I’m practicing more often than I think I would on my own, and I’m starting to see improvement which is super exciting! =) Today’s piece is a lyric from the song “After the Storm” by Mumford and Sons. (Which I’m sure nearly everyone knows. ;) ) This week has been busy for me and won’t get any slower – my sister Maria and I are going to be visiting friends in MO and MN, and we’re leaving in just a few days!

Happy Thursday! =)

I’m sitting here at Starbucks, watching it snow outside. Yesterday I was actually bemoaning the fact that it felt like Spring was here…and now it’s dropped about thirty degrees and is back to a nice, comfortable winter. ;) I love it. Although all you Mid-Westerners, you have my sympathy. I know you’ve had your fill of winter. But speaking of winter and coffee…check out that crema on that shot of espresso in the top right photo! (at least it looks like it’s a shot or two of espresso.) I’m telling you guys, that is the mark of some great coffee.

On Saturday I decided I needed to spend the day working on my website (because good grief, it’s been a work in progress for four months now!) and had one of those I’m-so-motivated-I’ll-finish-it-today sessions. I didn’t actually finish it, but I’ve gotten so far I think I’ll be done this week! It’s a huge relief to me, partially because the portfolio on my current site is so outdated that I have to update it as soon as possible.

Happy Monday!

Be Brave

“Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave” – Brave, Sara Bareilles

I just really like that song…it’s so fun to sing along to! (and I like the words, too) It’s one of my recent favorites on my Of Monsters and Men / Mumford and Sons / Adele Pandora station. So I thought I’d use a phrase from it for today’s hand lettered design. I think I like how it turned out!

What’s your current favorite song?

The last week has been the week of calligraphy/hand lettering for me! It’s so fun to start getting into this more – learning and practicing, and practicing some more. I just got the Nikko G nib and feel in love from the first stroke. haha cheese, I know. ;) But seriously, it’s a great nib! It’s stiff enough to make those thin lines easy, but flexible enough to give a nice thick stroke. (Aaaand I got some pretty sweet gold ink today that I am SO excited to start playing with!!) I decided to start something I’m calling #adrawingaday – I’m going to hand letter something every day of the work week. I’m hoping it’ll be great practice, plus a good way to get my creative juices flowing before I really start my day! (Below – the first of this series of “drawings.” Cause I mean it is like drawing, right? You’re just drawing words, that’s all.)
